Honoring Youth Leadership at Amherst’s Race Amity Day

Yesterday, AIL had the pleasure of supporting and attending the Town of Amherst, MA’s Human Rights Youth Heroism Awards - an inspiring event celebrating young leaders who embody kindness, courage, and community spirit. It was a joy to be part of such a meaningful day - we connected with others who share our commitment to a stronger, more inclusive Amherst.

A Celebration of Oneness

The awards were held in conjunction with Race Amity Day, a day dedicated to celebrating the oneness of the human family and promoting understanding across cultures, races, and communities. According to the Daily Hampshire Gazette article “Around Amherst: Youth Hero Awards to highlight Race Amity Day”, the event included a proclamation by the Town Council recognizing the rich cultural, ethnic, and racial diversity of Amherst’s residents, followed by a picnic and musical performances.

Honoring Young Leaders

The Youth Heroism Awards recognized students who demonstrate extraordinary leadership, empathy, and dedication to building community. Hosted at Mill River Recreation Area, the program included a reading of the Race Amity Day proclamation, musical performances, a drum circle, lunch, and the Youth Hero Awards presentation. It was inspiring to witness the energy, creativity, and commitment of these young heroes firsthand.

Building Community Together

Race Amity Day was founded by the late Ray Elliott, Amherst’s civil rights commissioner and president of the Western Massachusetts Chapter of the NAACP, and now continues under the guidance of the Human Rights Commission and community volunteers. AIL is proud to support events like this - uplifting youth, promoting inclusivity, and strengthening bonds of respect and community in Amherst.

We congratulate all the Youth Heroes and thank the Town of Amherst for hosting such a meaningful celebration.
