A Milestone for the Community: Jones Library Topping-Off Ceremony

The Jones Library Renovation & Expansion Project recently reached an exciting milestone with the completion of the building’s structural framework. To mark the occasion, the community gathered for a traditional Topping Off Ceremony, celebrating the placement of one of the final steel beams in the building’s structure.

Residents, community leaders, and project supporters came together as the beam - signed by members of the public over the previous two days - was lifted by crane and placed into the structure. The white-painted beam, decorated with an evergreen tree and an American flag, was raised into place as the crowd cheered and applauded, marking a meaningful moment in the project’s progress.

The milestone was part of the larger $46.1 million effort to expand and renovate the historic library, increasing the building from 48,000 to 63,000 square feet. When completed, the project will restore much of the original 1928 building while improving accessibility, functionality, and sustainability. The finished library will also include new features such as a dedicated teen space, expanded room for English as a Second Language programs, and additional areas to support community learning and engagement.

Several members of our team were grateful for the opportunity to attend the ceremony and witness this meaningful step in the project’s journey. As an organization that values community connection and forward-thinking sustainable development, it was inspiring to see a project like this taking shape in our region.

Events like the topping-off ceremony also recognize the many people who help bring projects like this to life - from the design teams and library staff to the construction crews who worked on the structure through the coldest and snowiest days of winter. The event celebrated the strong community support behind the project, with local leaders, library trustees, and residents all gathering to celebrate the milestone.

Expected to reopen in early 2027, the renovated and expanded library will continue its legacy as a welcoming space for learning, connection, and discovery for generations to come.

It was a great day for the Town of Amherst, Massachusetts - and the AIL team even had the chance to meet the Jones Library mascot!
