Celebrating National Croissant Day with Sweet Treats from Atkins Bakery

On January 30th, 2025, Amherst Innovative Living residents came together to celebrate National Croissant Day, indulging in buttery, flaky goodness from 10 AM to 1 PM in the various living communities throughout Amherst. Flavored croissants paired perfectly with complimentary coffee and tea, creating a cozy morning treat for everyone who joined. ☕🥐

This year, our croissants came from Atkins Bakery, located in South Amherst, a beloved New England bakery known for its homemade pies, donuts, from-scratch cookies, bread, and custom-decorated cakes. Their experienced bakers use high-quality ingredients to create products that are both delicious and comforting. Even before stepping into the store, the inviting aromas from this country bakery greet you — a promise of the homemade goodness in every pastry. Two of their most popular items, pies and cider donuts, have earned them a devoted following across the region, and now Amherst Innovative Living residents got to enjoy their renowned croissants too!

Croissants have a fascinating history that made this celebration extra special. Though widely associated with France, their origins actually trace back to Austria, where the kipferl — a crescent-shaped pastry — first appeared in the 13th century. It wasn’t until the 19th century that French bakers perfected the layered, buttery dough we know today. Over time, croissants became a beloved symbol of French baking and a global favorite for breakfast and coffee breaks alike.*

Residents savored a variety of flavored croissants, enjoying each flaky bite while connecting with neighbors in the welcoming atmosphere of the lobby. Events like this highlight how simple treats — especially from a bakery with care and tradition like Atkins — can bring people together and create moments of joy and community.
