Shaping Tomorrow’s Downtown

On September 13th, 2024 we were honored to take part in the Downtown Amherst Design Standards community workshops—a powerful gathering of voices, ideas, and aspirations for the future of our town center. Hosted by the Town of Amherst in partnership with Dodson & Flinker, these workshops invited residents, business owners, and community leaders to help shape the look, feel, and function of downtown for years to come.

Amherst Innovative Living Lends a Voice to Downtown’s Future

We were thrilled to join dozens of other engaged community members during the two-day event, which included a walking tour of North Common, listening sessions, and an interactive visioning workshop. From thoughtful conversations about streetscapes and building design to dreaming big about how downtown Amherst can remain welcoming, sustainable, and vibrant, the energy in the room was contagious.

As a local business with deep roots in this community, we’re committed to playing a role in how our shared spaces evolve. These design standards will impact everything from sidewalks and signage to building facades and green spaces—and we’re grateful for the opportunity to help guide the process.

Why These Workshops Matter

Downtown Amherst is more than just a business district; it’s the heart of our community. With growing demand for more accessible, inclusive, and environmentally conscious spaces, updating our design standards is a critical step toward a future that reflects our values and meets our needs.

These workshops gave us all a chance to listen, learn, and share ideas about what’s working—and what’s not. From the charm of historic buildings to the need for more pedestrian-friendly streets, every voice added something meaningful to the vision we’re building together.

Looking Ahead

We’re excited about what’s to come as the town of Amherst and Dodson & Flinker continue refining these standards with input from across the community. If you weren’t able to attend, we encourage you to stay involved—your perspective matters.
